How to Find the Right Driving Instructor (for YOU)
The right instructor makes all the difference. Here's how to find someone whose approach, patience and teaching style genuinely suit the way you learn.
Choosing a driving instructor is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a learner — and it's about far more than who has a free slot this week. The right instructor doesn't just get you through the test; they help you become a safe, confident driver for life. The wrong fit can knock your confidence, drain your bank balance, and leave you dreading every lesson.
So how do you find someone who's genuinely right for you? Here's what to look for.
Start with how you learn
Everyone learns differently. Some people want structure and clear targets; others need patience, reassurance and time to build confidence. Before you book anything, be honest with yourself about what you need. If you're a nervous beginner, an instructor who is calm and unhurried will serve you far better than one who rushes you onto busy roads in week one.
Manual or automatic — decide first
It sounds obvious, but decide whether you want to learn in a manual or an automatic car before you start calling around. A manual licence lets you drive both; an automatic can be quicker to pick up and is a great fit if clutch control is the thing holding you back. Neither is wrong — it's about what suits you and the kind of driving you'll do.
Questions worth asking before you book
A good instructor will happily answer all of these — and the way they answer tells you a lot about how they teach:
- Are you a fully qualified instructor, or a trainee? Both can be excellent — but you deserve to know.
- How do you structure lessons, and how will I know I'm making progress?
- Do you cover the local test routes and real-world roads, not just the same loop every week?
- What's your approach with nervous or anxious learners?
- What are your cancellation and rescheduling terms?
Green flags to look for
The best instructors tend to share a few things in common. They're patient and calm under pressure. They explain things clearly and check you've understood, rather than just telling you what to do. They tailor lessons to your pace instead of forcing you through a fixed script. And they're honest with you about where you are — including when you're not quite test-ready yet.
Read reviews, but read between the lines
Reviews are useful, but look past the star rating. The most telling reviews mention how the learner felt — did they feel supported, listened to, and genuinely more confident? A wall of comments about patience and reassurance is worth more than a single line about a first-time pass.
It's okay to change your mind
Here's something too few people say out loud: if it isn't working, you're allowed to change instructor. You're not being difficult, and you're not letting anyone down. Learning to drive is a big investment of time and money, and you deserve to spend it with someone who brings out your best.
